Lue Ahmet " We are frequent travellers to Vietnam as our 'second home', and have been coming to Hanoi since around 1994. In all our years of travelling and eating our way around Vietnam, 49 Bat Dan is hands down the best pho I've ever had.
Don't expect much when you get there - this is a 'low plastic stools, tossed paper napkins on the floor' sort of place, but we've eaten there a few times (at least once on every visit to Hanoi) and we've never gotten ill or had any tummy problems. What you should expect, however, is truly excellent and authentic pho.
You can choose from a couple basic variations (price varies as well), but I'd highly recommend the Pho Bo Tai Nam (pho with rare beef flank steak) for any first timers to pho, or even to those who have tried pho before. Raw pieces of flank steak are sliced up and tossed into steaming hot beef-broth, so that they are still tender and rare by the time you get stuck into it. Don't forget to get a piece of Xiao Kuay (fried bread dough) to dunk into it.
We usually go early for breakfast - perfect for a cool winter's morning. I'm constantly craving for this pho - and it's part of the reason why we look forward to our travels to Hanoi! A definite 'must visit'."
Majior Hadmet " This place had by far the best Pho in Hanoi in our experience. The broth is very flavourful and portions are a good size. We had no clue as to what we were ordering but it was delicious. It was so good that we went back 3 times. You order, pay and they hand you your bowl of pho.....be careful the bowl is hot and spillage does occur. Finding a place to sit can be a challenge especially during the morning period and after 7pm. Please note that the are shut form around 10:00am to 6:00pm - but open early for breakfast! Enjoy"
